Class News Oct 4th

Mrs. Edwards 3rd Grade Classroom News

09/30-10/4

We had another terrific week! Your children are shining stars! Students worked hard to complete 3 sections of the MAP test – reading, math and language. We will send home reports with progress reports on October 17th. We had a blast on our field trip to Blake Island! We are fortunate that we got to see and experience in person much of what we have been learning about through our in class Native American research.

Reading: We continued our whole class book study on the book, Magic Tree House Buffalo Before Breakfast. We are continuing reading and comprehending non-fiction text through our Achieve program. Ask your child about the 75% club!

Writing: We continued mastering opinion essays. They are practicing how to follow the steps of writing workshop – plan, draft, edit and publish. Students get to share their published stories to the class and receive compliments and questions about their work. You will see your children’s published work come home throughout the year, I encourage you to celebrate the best effort they put into a published story! We will wrap up opinion writing next week and move on to letter writing.

Math: Next week students will learn three properties of addition to help understand and check accuracy of 3 and 4 digit addition. Then, we will move to 3 and 4 digit addition and subtraction with regrouping.

Religion: This week, students wrote their own version of the Apostles Creed by reflecting and writing what they believe about God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. We also took a look at the first three commandments and brainstormed ways in which they could follow each commandment this week. Next week we get to have our own class Mass with our 6th grade buddies. We haven’t yet introduced who our Unbound Guatemalan student is to the class. We will over that soon along with how write a proper letter, address it and things to include as a Pen Pal and friend. We plan on teaching a lesson on Safe Touching which is provided by the Archdiocese on October 14th. In your child’s folder today, you will find a letter about this lesson as well as an Opt-Out form if you do not want your child to participate in this lesson. If that’s so, please return the Opt-Out form to me by October 14th.

Social Studies: We continued our unit on Native American tribes. Each child is assigned a tribe, located in a region of the United States. They have been researching the tribe and finding information on a number of different categories. They have researched through books as well as provided webpages. They will begin creating their final projects soon!
