Class News March 6th

Mrs. Edwards 3rd Grade Classroom News

03/06/2020

We had another lovely week together in room 22! A few highlights of our week were reflecting and writing Lenten goals, praying the stations of cross, working on our multiplication and division fact fluency and writing our final science essays.

Science: After spending weeks becoming experts on climate regions as well as plant and animal adaptations, this week they worked on their final culminating project to tie all the pieces together in a final essay format. Students designed a make-believe plant or animal with at least 3 adaptations for their chosen climate region. This week they worked on applying what they have learned about writing complete paragraphs to write a 5-paragraph essay to explain their design and show their learning.  They worked very hard on these essays making sure to follow each step to plan, draft, edit and revise their work. They presented their final projects to the rest of the class and received compliments and questions from their peers.

Our class continues to practice being mindful stewards of our environment by reusing plastic bottle caps. We painted more of our collected bottle caps as a start to our recycled art project. My hope is that this ongoing project teaches the students that even as 3rd graders, they have the power to make a positive impact on our planet.

We will start our unit on fossils next week! We are excited for our field trip to the Burke Museum next Thursday. See more details about our field trip down below.

Math: This week, we spent more time reviewing division and multiplication. We practiced fact fluency, solving for an unknown in a number sentence and determining important and extra information within word problems in order to solve. Soon, we will begin exploring fractions!

Religion: We reflected on and wrote down a Lenten goal for ourselves that falls under one of the 3 pillars of Lent. We have been taking extra time each day to pray in the form of meditation as well as bring extra attention to what we are grateful for each day. We are keeping our Unbound student in our prayers and giving our dollars (alms) in aid of their education. Thank you for your participation. We recite the Stations of the Cross at 2:30pm each Friday during Lent. On Good Friday, the Stations will be at 11:00 am. We will have our own 3rd grade mass with our 6th grade buddies next Wednesday morning. You are welcome to join us for any of these times!

I will deliver our second (and final) Touching Safety lesson to the class on Monday March 9th. I sent home an overview of the lesson as well as an optional Opt-Out form.

Reading: Through our whole class book study on the BFG, students are working on describing the characters in the story and explaining how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. By choosing to read aloud, students are working on reading with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

Writing: Students published their 5-paragraph informative essay explaining their made-up organism and how their chosen adaptations help it survive in a particular climate region. Some students worked on typing their essays.
