We had a wonderful week back. Students were happy to see each other and share about their mid-winter break adventures.

Science: We have been learning all about animal and plant adaptations. Students are connecting their knowledge of climate regions and organism adaptations through an in-class project. They are designing a make-believe plant or animal with at least 3 adaptations for their chosen climate region. They will apply what they have learned about writing a complete paragraph to complete a 5-paragraph essay for this project. We invited an expert in animal adaptations from the city of Edmonds Nature Program to come share with us about local animal adaptations. We were able to observe real animal physical adaptations in pelts, pellets, scat, footprints and skulls.

Our class continues to practice being mindful stewards of our environment by reusing plastic bottle caps. This week, we began painting our collected bottle caps as a start to our recycled art project. My hope is that this ongoing project teaches the students that even as 3rd graders, they have the power to make a positive impact on our planet.

Our next science unit is all about fossils! We have a field trip scheduled to the Burke Museum in March. Please review the field trip permission slip and volunteer information in your child’s homework folder. Thank you!

Math: This week, we worked on connecting division and subtraction. Students practiced solving division problems by using repeated subtraction on a number line. Students also worked on building division fact fluency and solving multi step multiplication and division word problems.

Religion: Lent begins next week. We will have an all-school Mass on February 26th for Ash Wednesday. Students should wear dress uniform. We will be praying in thanksgiving for our blessings and also for our Unbound students and giving our dollars (alms) in aid of their education. Thank you for your participation. We will recite the Stations of the Cross at 2:30pm each Friday during Lent. On Good Friday, the Stations will be at 11:00 am.

Reading: Through our whole class book study on The BFG, students are working on describing the characters in the story and explaining how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. By choosing to read aloud, students are working on reading with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

Writing: Students are working on writing a 5 paragraph informative essay explaining their made up organism and how their chosen adaptations help it survive in a particular climate region.

Dates and Reminders:

  • Wednesday, February 26th – Ash Wednesday Mass. Dress Uniform.
  • Thursday, March 12th – Field Trip to the Burke Museum
  • Friday, March 13th – No School
  • Wednesday, March 18th – St. Patrick All School Mass. Dress Uniform.
  • Thursday, March 26th – Family STEM night

Have a wonderful weekend!

Blessings,

We had a terrific week together learning and adventuring our way through 3rd grade. Your children are such joyful learners with big hearts and curious minds. It is an honor to teach them every day!

Science: We have been very busy scientists! Students have been becoming experts on climate regions around the world as well as plant and animal adaptations. Through a variety of non-fiction resources, maps, responses and discussions, students have learned the important facts about the rainforest, desert, polar climate, mountains, mediterranean and temperate climate. Students worked on pulling evidence from text to support their thinking. Students worked in partners to demonstrate their learning by creating a poster that describes one of the climate regions we learned about. They practiced conducting further research in books from the library and some online research. Then, they taught the rest of their class about their climate region.

Next week, we will host a Nature Discovery classroom visit by an Edmonds Ranger Naturalist who will speak with us about animal and plant adaptations in the pacific northwest.

Math: This week, we worked on understanding what division means. Students worked on how to model division problems, how to write division sentences that describe equal sharing, how to find the quotient of a division problem and how to write the inverse multiplication number sentence.

Religion: This week, we learned of three ways to understand the Church. We learned that the Church is the family of God the Father, the Body of Christ and the Temple of the Holy Spirit. We read and discussed that each of these is a different way for us to see and understand the Church. On Wednesday, we attend the all school Mass honoring Saint Valentine.

Reading: We are working on identifying, highlighting and citing evidence within text.

Writing: We are working responding to questions using complete sentences and including evidence from text within our responses.

Dates and Reminders:

  • Wednesday, February 26th – Ash Wednesday Mass. Dress Uniform
  • Thursday, March 12th – Kindergarten and 1st grade Grandparents and Special Friends Day. Dress Uniform.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Blessings,
